Dates/Time • Leave WHS at 6am on Friday September 27th, 2024 • Return to WHS by 9pm (at the latest) on Saturday September 28th, 2024

The purpose of this field trip is to learn about: • Geologic history and information about the Duluth Complex; the minerals and rocks of NE Minnesota • Mining for precious metals (copper, nickel, platinum, palladium, gold, and silver) • Agate hunting and an overview of glaciation of Lake Superior, Glacial Lake Duluth, and the St. Louis River • NE Minnesota’s volcanic and plate tectonic history of the divergent rift valley from 1.1 billion years ago • Igneous and metamorphic rock formations at Gooseberry Falls State Park and Jay Cooke State Park • River erosion, dams, and management at Thomson Dam on the St. Louis River • Meeting professionals in the geoscience industry and exploring post-secondary geoscience options • Iron-ore and taconite mining & industry at Hibbing Taconite Mine and Processing Plant - Hull Rust Mahoning Site • Taconite mining & processing, with an emphasis on geology, economics, human impact, and reclamation • Reclamation of mined lands through the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources
